For this year, the selections are being made, the crosses are producing seed, and the flowers are de-budded.
Due to the very hot and ‘long’ Summer, it was a challenging season, but still very successful and that will hopefully carry on into the new seedlings for the Future.
A part of our seedling field looked like the colors in an Asiatic seedling field, with a lot of pastels.
A picture of that section is underneath this message.
A part of the selections we made this season will be shown on our ‘Selections Cut‘ page.
While looking at them, you will conclude that there are several new colors and color combinations available now in Oriental hybrids.
For the retail, we were able to select many new varieties, including L. speciosum hybrids.
In contrast to L. speciosum var. ‘Uchida’ or ‘Album’, they will flower four weeks earlier and, in some cases, six weeks.
All the lilies we selected this year will either be scaled or replanted.

In July of 2017, our hybridizer Johan Mak celebrated 40 years in lily breeding. Below is an article about him by Mr. Chuck Robinson, which was published in the QB of that year.
Here some pictures of the party
In 2000, we at Mak-Leek, Inc. hosted members of the North American Lily Society, which had a convention in Portland, Oregon.
Although it was just our 2nd year after moving to Scio, OR, we welcomed them, showed the operation, and served dinner at our address.
This also involved an auction by and for the Lily Society.
Here is a clip of that event.
When we moved to Oregon, US in 1990, we were not able to grow all of our bulbs ourselves.
For that reason, we contacted some contract growers.
In the following clip, you see part of the farm of the Baumann Brothers in Pasco, WA, who were eager to help us out.
Most of the following clip was recorded in the first part of the eighties, so it’s an ‘Oldie,’ but still interesting to watch, and for us, nice to have.
Too bad it is in Dutch, but the video speaks for itself.
